Application of dry polymer binders

Dry polymer binders are a different tool from lime, cement and slag.

What they are

Where cementitious binders create strength by chemical reaction, a dry powdered polymer works by binding the fine particles in the material together and making the surface water-resistant, so it sheds rain instead of absorbing it, holds together under traffic, and stops producing dust.

They're the binder of choice where a road or surface needs to stay unsealed but perform like it isn't: unsealed council roads, mine and quarry haul roads, hardstands, laydown areas, and access roads that will carry traffic for years without being sealed.

What they do

Water, dust and durability

  • Water resistanceTreated material absorbs far less water, so it doesn't soften, rut or turn to mud in wet weather.
  • Dust controlThe fines are bound. Dust generation drops dramatically and stays down.
  • DurabilityThe surface holds its shape and loses far less material to traffic and weather than untreated gravel.
  • Fast return to serviceDepending on the product and conditions, a polymer-treated surface can be trafficked within hours.

How we work with you

Full-service and part-service

Flexible ways to engage Accurate, depending on your project requirements.

Full-service

Everything required to build the pavement from start to finish, self-delivered and handed over complete.

  • Pre-milling, spreading, mixing
  • Compaction, trimming and rolling
  • Seal coat or asphalt
  • One contract, one site supervisor

Part-service

Plant and crew for the stabilisation step itself, working to your programme with your own resources alongside.

  • Stabiliser, spreader truck and water cart
  • Operators who know the plant
  • Your compaction, trimming and surfacing
  • The specialist step, on your dates

FAQs

Common questions.

Get in touch
01How are dry polymer binders applied?

The polymer is spread as a dry powder at a low rate, a fraction of the rate for a cementitious binder, and mixed through the top 100–200mm of the existing material with the stabiliser. The layer is watered to optimum moisture, compacted and shaped. Some products can also be applied in solution for lighter surface treatments. Polymers can be combined with a light cementitious binder where structural strength is also needed: a polymer for water resistance and dust, lime or cement for strength.

02When is a polymer the right choice?

A polymer isn't the answer everywhere. It won't turn a failed base into a heavily bound pavement; that's a job for slag/lime or cement. Where it earns its keep is making an unsealed surface perform: for a council that can't seal every road, a mine that needs a haul road to hold in the wet, or a quarry that's spending more on water carts than it would on a treatment. It's not a commonly offered service in NSW.
