Shoulder stabilisation

The shoulder is the edge of the road, and it fails first.

What it is

It carries the wheel path of every vehicle that pulls over, every truck that drifts wide, and every drop of water that runs off the crown.

On most rural and regional roads it was built lighter than the running lanes to begin with.

Shoulder stabilisation strengthens it. The existing shoulder material is stabilised in place, usually with a lime or slag/lime binder, to a strength that holds an edge, resists rutting, and stops water getting under the pavement from the side. Where the road is being widened, the same process builds the new shoulder into a proper structural extension of the pavement rather than a strip of loose gravel beside it.

When councils and TfNSW specify it

The right call when

  • Edge break and edge dropThe seal is breaking away at the edge and there's a step down to the shoulder. Stabilising the shoulder gives the seal edge something to hold onto.
  • WideningBringing a narrow rural road up to a standard lane width. The widened strip needs to be as strong as the existing pavement, and stabilisation is the way to get there without importing base.
  • DrainageA stabilised, shaped shoulder sheds water instead of holding it against the pavement edge.
  • Safety upgradesSealed shoulder programmes on state and regional roads, with a stabilised base under the new seal.

01How is a shoulder stabilised?

Narrow-width work is its own discipline. The stabiliser runs the shoulder in a single pass at 150–300mm; binder is spread ahead of it; a smaller roller compacts it; the grader trims the crossfall to drain outward. It's usually done under a lane closure with traffic control rather than a full road closure, so the running lanes stay open. Accurate's crews and plant are set up for it, and it's a natural addition to a rehabilitation contract on the same road: one mobilisation, both scopes.
