Gravel road solutions

Most of the road network outside NSW's towns is unsealed.

What it is

Rural councils spend a large share of their maintenance budget grading it, resheeting it, and watching the gravel wash and blow away between visits.

Gravel road stabilisation changes the cycle. The existing gravel, and the top of the subgrade beneath it, is stabilised in place with a binder suited to unsealed roads: lime, a light cement or slag blend, or a dry polymer. The result is a wearing surface that holds its shape, sheds water, resists rutting and corrugation, and loses far less material to traffic and weather.

The maintenance interval stretches from months to years. The gravel that would have been trucked in for the next three resheets stays in the quarry.

What we do

On unsealed roads

  1. Stabilised resheeting

Where a road needs new gravel anyway, stabilising it as it's placed turns a resheet into a pavement that lasts several cycles.

  2. In-place stabilisation of existing gravel

Where there's enough material on the road, no new gravel is needed at all: the existing surface is bound and reshaped.

  3. Polymer treatment

For roads where dust and water are the main problems (mine and quarry access, school bus routes, roads past houses), a dry polymer binder gives a water-resistant, low-dust surface without sealing.

  4. Preparation for sealing

Where a council is upgrading a gravel road to a sealed one, stabilisation of the existing gravel is the base course. Seal on top and the road is done, without importing a new base.

FAQs

Common questions.

Get in touch
01What does it cost a rural council?

The economics are simple. A stabilised gravel road costs more than a grade-and-resheet on the day, and less than two of them. On roads that get resheeted every two or three years, it pays for itself on the second cycle and every cycle after that, and it frees the grader for somewhere else. Accurate's Local Government Procurement approval covers this work. Mid North Coast and Hunter councils can engage through the panel.
